Gary Pendergrass Presented at MWCC

GREDELL Engineering Resources, Inc. staff member Gary Pendergrass, P.E., R.G., recently presented at the Missouri Waste Control Coalition (MWCC) conference.  The theme for this year’s conference was “Now Entering The Twilight Zone of Waste Control”.

Mr. Pendergrass presented on Effective Community and Media Relations at the 2021 MWCC Environmental Conference held July 11 – 13, 2021.  Communicating clearly and effectively has never been more important than in today’s world. Cameras are everywhere, and social media is instantaneous. The wrong word or awkward phrase can go viral at the speed of light; sometimes with profound impacts on your project, your company, or your family. This presentation will teach you the skills necessary to successfully navigate the pitfalls of community and media interaction. Effective communication is not about being slick or evasive – it is all about being clear and direct, and communicating the message you intend. The “dos and don’ts” of effective communication will be illustrated using real world examples in slides and videos. “There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices, to be found only in the minds of men.” The Twilight Zone, Season 1, Episode 22.

Mr. Pendergrass has an M.S. in Geological Engineering, Missouri University of Science & Technology; B.S. in Geological Engineering, Missouri University of Science & Technology; and B.S. in Engineering Geology and Stratigraphy, Missouri State University.  Mr. Pendergrass has more than 35 years of experience in management of major engineering and environmental projects, and management of diverse professional and technical groups. In his role at GREDELL Engineering Resources, Inc.,  Gary serves as Senior Project Manager & Engineer in the Springfield, Missouri office, managing geotechnical, geological and environmental projects. Over the course of his career, he has led major projects involving dam inspection and rehabilitation, dam stability and flood routing, abutment and foundation grouting, dam design, water sourcing and supply, water quality, observation well and piezometer installation, karst evaluation/engineering, geophysical investigation, landfill development, site remediation, power plant construction, and litigation support.

Welcome Mike Tuter

Mike Tuter, E.I., recently joined the staff of GREDELL Engineering Resources, Inc. (Gredell Engineering) as an Environmental Engineer.  Mr. Tuter brings 13 years of AutoCAD, Civil 3D and Revit experience to Gredell Engineering. His areas of expertise include: civil-site engineer, project manager, and engineering design technician.

Mr. Tuter holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil & Environmental Engineering from University of Missouri in Columbia.  He joins Gredell Engineering’s team to support our capabilities and experience in environmental engineering and to further his pursuit as a licensed engineer.

Mr. Tuter will be based in Gredell Engineering’s Jefferson City office, but will work on projects throughout the state and in adjoining states.

Welcome Blake Smotherman

Blake Smotherman, R.G., recently joined the staff of GREDELL Engineering Resources, Inc. (Gredell Engineering) as a Senior Geologist in our Springfield office.  Mr. Smotherman brings 21 years of hydrogeology and petroleum geology experience to Gredell Engineering. His areas of expertise include: liquid and solid waste, geology, geochemistry and geophysics.

Mr. Smotherman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Anthropology/Geology from Missouri State University and a Master of Science degree in Geology from Emporia State.  He joins Gredell Engineering’s team to support our capabilities and experience in hydrogeology and geophysics.  In addition, he will expand our geologic services in southern Missouri and will help complete current projects.

Mikel Carlson to Serve as ACE Awards Committee Chairman

Mikel C. Carlson, R.G. of GREDELL Engineering Resources, Inc., Jefferson City, MO, was selected by the Missouri Department of Conservation to serve in the capacity of Awards Committee Chairman for the upcoming annual Association of Conservation Engineers meeting in Springfield, Missouri on October 11-13, 2021.  In that capacity, Mr. Carlson will be involved in the review and judging of submittals for the 28^th Annual Carl V. Anderson Engineering Project Awards to be presented at this meeting.

Awarded annually, the Carl V. Anderson Conservation Project Awards recognize ACE members for outstanding projects in conservation engineering.  The purpose of the awarded competition is to give recognition to those members, consultants and/or their departments whose work, as judged by their peers and associates, best exhibits the goals and objectives of the Association of Conservation Engineers.

As Principal Geologist, Mr. Carlson has 30 years of regulatory and consulting experience in the areas of solid waste, hazardous waste, surface mining and stormwater control. Mr. Carlson is responsible for designing and implementing geologic investigations including detailed site investigations, hydrogeologic studies, mine development, contaminant plume delineations, and soil (borrow) evaluations. He is likewise responsible for the design and installation of groundwater and gas monitoring systems.

Ken Ewers Elected as MWCC President

Ken Ewers, R.G., of GREDELL Engineering Resources, Inc., Jefferson City, MO, was elected President of the Missouri Waste Control Coalition (MWCC) at the 2021 MWCC Environmental Conference which took place July 11 – 13, 2021.  Ken has served as an advisor for the MWCC since 2015.  This is a two year commitment and Mr. Ewers will spend the first year as President Elect and Conference Chairman, and the second year as President.

Ken helped the MWCC plan and promote the annual three-day environmental conference held at Osage Beach.  The conference provides an annual forum for discussing the new developments of waste management, site remediation, and environmental protection.  MWCC was formed in 1981 to bring together citizens, government, business, and industry to discuss the rapidly changing field of waste management.

Mr. Ewers has over 13 years of consulting experience in the areas of detailed hydrogeologic site characterization, groundwater modeling, and subsurface investigations related to hazardous and solid waste.  Mr. Ewers has developed unique methods for in-situ and laboratory characterization of hydrogeologic units, has managed aquifer testing programs including multi-well pumping tests, packer testing, and slug testing and has presented these methods at previous MWCC Environmental Conferences.
